Tire wear can be a real headache. The problem is, it happens so slowly and progressively that we often don’t notice. But there are many reasons why it’s important to change your tires, and why you should be on the lookout for them during this Easter Holidays before hitting on those long trips and Eagle Glass is here to give you the best tips to help you enjoy your drive.
The primary function of tire tread is to divert water away from beneath the tire, improving traction on wet roads and reducing the risk of hydroplaning. As the tread wears down, the tire becomes increasingly smooth and loses wet-weather driving capability. It might feel fine when the roads are dry, but once it starts raining your car will quickly slide around even at low speeds.
The Penny Test
Once tread is down to 1/16th of an inch, the tire is no longer safe. An easy way to check the depth of your tire tread by taking a penny, placing it upside down with Lincoln facing you in the center of the tread, where it is thickest. If you can see Lincoln’s hair on top of his head, you should shop for tires and have them placed for you at Eagle Glass. If you can see the very top of his head, it’s probably best to stop what you’re doing and get new tires at Eagle Glass immediately! If you cannot see the hair on top of his head, you’re good to go.
Driving on wet roads is not the only problem when your tires are worn. The thin thread is also more susceptible to total failure when put under stress, like when driving over a pothole, curb, or simply when driving with low tire pressure. In fact, particularly nasty potholes can damage your tire even if the tread is in good condition, so you should also be on the lookout for abnormal bulges on the sidewall. If you find one, Eagle Glass will be of service to replace it for you immediately regardless of tread wear!
